Bluesky may look like a Twitter/X or Threads competitor. But it’s actually an entirely different thing. It’s built on an open source programming standard called AT Protocol. That makes it the first open source social network to achieve meaningful scale. By the end of January its user base had hit 30 million. By the time you read this it will be 34+ million.
Why care? It’s way more practical to have a social network that doesn’t lock you in. I have one primary phone number. I have one primary email address. I have one primary contact database. It stands to reason that I should have one primary social network identity that I can use anywhere, not one on LinkedIn, on Facebook, on Instagram, on Threads, on YouTube, on Twitter/X and on TikTok that I can’t connect to each other.
Open source social networks are less emotionally fraught. We care less if Mark Zuckerberg makes changes at Facebook, Instagram and Threads. We just go somewhere else. In the past, open source protocols have also sparked an increase in innovation, in expended access and in improvements in the user experience.
